Dowell Prettyman, 40 years old, of 318 I street Northwest, Miami, was instantly killed at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning by a falling slab at the Skelton Mine No. 2 at Douthat Oklahoma. Charles Powell of Galena Kansas was injured so seriously that doctors say he has no chance to recover. Both men were hit on the head by the slab which weighted five tons. Three doctors were called and two ambulances took the hard rock lead and zinc miners to the Picher hospital, Picher Oklahoma. Both were working on the first shift. Prettyman's family live here. His wife is in Joplin Missouri at present undergoing medical treatment. Funeral arrangements have not been made. A late report from Picher said that Powell had died from the injuries.
The body of Dallas Prettyman, a miner, who lived at 318 I street Northwest, Miami, who was fatally injured in a mine accident near Tar River Oklahoma [now Cardin] yesterday, was brought to the family home this afternoon by the Todd undertaking company, of Picher. Mr. Prettyman died at the Picher hospital yesterday. Funeral Services will be held at the family home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The burial will be in the G.A.R. cemetery. Funeral services for Charles Powell, the other miner who was killed at the same time will be held at his home at Galena Kansas. Mr. Prettyman was 48 years of age. He and Mr. Powell were fatally injured when a large slab of rock fell upon them while they were in the Skelton Mine. Note: Newspaper had burial in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miami Oklahoma. The cemetery records are not complete for 1920, and records, or burial plot, could not be located.
Picher Oklahoma, Jan 21. Charles Powell, 35 years old, who was fatally injured by a falling slab at the Skelton Mine No. 2,near Douthat Oklahoma at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, died a the Picher hospital at 2 o'clock. The Todd undertaking company took the body to his home at Galena Kansas from which place the funeral will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Martha Powell, and a son six years old. He was injured in the same accident that Dallas Prettyman of Miami met instant death. The Prettyman funeral will be held at the same time from his residents 318 I street northwest, Miami.
Funeral services for Dallas Prettyman, Miami miner who was killed in a mine near Picher Oklahoma a few days ago were held at 3 o'clock at the chapel of Sill-Miller undertaking company. Rev. R. C. Stubblefield, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, had charge of the services. Interment was in the G.A.R. cemetery at Miami.
Rosie M. Powell, Saturday, through her attorneys, filed a suit in the Ottawa county Oklahoma district court asking $30,000 damages from Dr. L. S. Skelton, who is the owner of the Skelton Mine in the Miami district. Her husband, Charles Powell, was recently killed in an accident which occurred at Skelton Mine No. 2, and she is left a widow with two small children. She alleges her husband met his death as a result of negligence on the part of the mine operator in not providing the proper safe guards.
