John Powers, 33 year old Picher Oklahoma hard rock lead and zinc miner, and former resident of Miami, was killed instantly early today, Nov 5, 1937, when he fell from an ore train at the Bird Dog Mine and was crushed underneath a moving car. The mishap occurred at 5 am while the victim was working on the "graveyard" shift. Powers were employed as brakeman at the hard rock lead and zinc mine. He resided at 209 East Fourth street at Picher. Surviving are his wife, Gladys L. Powers; three step-children, Wanda L. Ray, Junior Ray and Leo Shellman; his father, Erb Powers of Picher; mother, Mrs. Eva Morris of Miami, and four brothers, Will Powers of Arlington Kansas, Raymond Powers and Vern Powers, both of Miami, and Homer Powers of Picher. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at the Union church in Picher. The Rev. Wesley Post will officiate. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery under direction of the Cooper funeral home, Miami. Pallbearers will be Woody Odneal, Ed Craig, Jack Gerard, Tom Kelly, Jack Hemphill, Albert Bogard and Joe Lucas.
