Homestake Mine

Miami Record Herald · Nov 16 1917 · Pg 6 · Col 4

While descending the shaft of the Homestake Mine about 5:30 o'clock Wednesday, a drill steel fell into the shaft from the surface, striking Roy Pearson, 27 years old, on the head, killing him almost instantly. The Homestake Mine is located two miles east of Picher Oklahoma, and Pearson, with two other men of the night crew, was going down to begin work. The hoistman, who saw the steel fall, immediately raised the bucket and the body was removed. Pearson did not fall from the bucket, though his skull was crushed and he was dead when the bucket was raised. The other men in the bucket were unhurt.

The paper changed names several times making it difficult to search by title. Most of the Hard Rock Lead and Zinc Fatalities newspaper clippings are from the personal files of I. D. Hulvey, former powderman in the Picher mine and then owner of the Hulvey Insurance Agency.
