Huttig Lead and Zinc Mine
Picher Oklahoma, Dec 14 One miner was killed and another seriously injured by a premature explosion of squib shots late Tuesday at the Huttig Lead and Zinc Mine No. 2, between Hockerville and Zincville Oklahoma, about three miles east of Picher. Lee Overstreet, 32, machine man, was instantly killed. He was a former resident of Galena Kansas. He is survived by his wife and three small sons, who reside at Hockerville. The body was taken to the morgue of the Todd undertaking company, of Picher. Elmer Harmon, 24, machine helper is severely injured in the limbs, but is expected to recover.
Harmon told a reporter at the Picher hospital Tuesday night, that Overstreet and another machine man, Ray DeGraffenreid, and himself were preparing to squid two sets of holes shortly before 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Six holes were at one machine stand and two at another a few feet distant. The eight holes were loaded with three sticks of mine powder each, and they considered that ample fuse was attached as each one carried from six to eight feet. Hermon said the fuse burned more rapidly than they anticipated and the last hole loaded exploded while Overstreet was directly in front of it. Harmon yelled a warning. The first explosion put them in darkness. Harmon and DeGraffenreid ran for safety. Harmon bumped into a can, the explosion of all the shots followed and Harmon was pitched 18 feet down the stope, landing on his shoulders, which caused his worst injury. DeGraffenreid got below the range of the shots in safety and was only slightly injured. He did not report for medical attention. Funeral arrangements for Overstreet have not been completed.
Harmon is resting easy at the Picher hospital, Picher Oklahoma.
