Herbert Grant North, a 26 year old miner of Baxter Springs Kansas was instantly killed early Monday morning, about 8, when a large rock fell on him while he was at work in the West Side Mine operated by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company, about one mile north of Picher. According to reports, North was trimming beneath the rock when it broke loose and rolled over on him and his body was mangled by the weight of the rock. North had been employed by the Company since 1943. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nadine North, and a daughter both of the home. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth North and two brothers, Walter North and Earl North of Columbus Kansas; four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Gatewood, Mrs. Mildred Coy and Mrs. Ella Rummer of Columbus, and Mrs. Mae Peters of Chetopa Kansas. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Columbus Kansas, under direction of the Catlett funeral home, Wednesday morning, at 10:30. Rev. Monroe Vaughn officiated and burial was in Fairview cemetery near Melrose Kansas

Picher Oklahoma Herbert Grant North, 26 year old Kansas miner, was killed instantly at the Eagle Picher Smelting Company's West Side Mine No. 2 a zinc mine, north of Picher, at about 8 this morning. North was crushed to death when a huge boulder rolled over him after it fell a few feet from the wall he had been trimming. Byron Hutcheson, safety engineer for the Company, reported.
