Morey, Dan "Blondy"
Age 38
Lawyers No. 2 Mine
Picher Oklahoma, Dec 10--Struck on the head by a boulder which fell from a can of ore being hoisted at the Lawyers Mine No. 2, northwest of Picher, at 10:45 this morning, Dan"Blondy" Morey, 38 years old, a tub hooker was almost instantly killed. He was married and lived at Galena Kansas. Morey was alive when fellow workmen picked him up, but he had died when the Todd ambulance rushing him to Picher had arrived at the hospital. Tub hookers are the men who stand at the bottom of the mine shafts and hook the hoisting cable on the bails of the ore cans, sending the empty cans back to the shovelers and sending the filled cans to the hopper above ground. When a rock rolls off an upgoing can, as in this case, the tub hooker is likely to be struck where he is standing at the bottom of the shaft. The Lawyers Mine No. 2 is one mile west of Treece Kansas, on the Kansas side of the state line. No funeral arrangements have been made.
