Montgomery, M. Dee
Age 61
Eagle Picher Central Mill
Picher Oklahoma, Aug 5 M. Dee Montgomery, night watchman at the Eagle-Picher Central Mill, died at the Picher hospital at 2 o'clock this morning from hemorrhage caused from shock and a pistol wound last night about 8:30 o'clock when he fell into one of the large hoppers of the mill. Mr. Montgomery, an employee of the Eagle Picher Company for the last 20 years was making his regular rounds when he accidentally fell into the hopper. An engineer and brakeman on a nearby ore train saw the man fall and heard his pistol explode as he rolled down the 65 foot hopper. His pistol had become dislodged from the holster and struck some obstacle which caused it to discharge, the bullet entering the back just to the right of the spine above the waistline and coming out through the lower part of the right chest. Hospital authorities said the bullet evidently pierced the liver and this wound, together with bruises about the body and the shock led to his death. He was conscious up to a short time before his death. He said the gun discharged accidentally.
During his residence in Picher, Mr. Montgomery had been active in civic and political affairs of the city, having served at one time on the city council, and was for several years a member of the school board of District 15, serving as clerk of that body. He was prominent in fraternal circles, being a member of the local lodge A.F. & A.M., thirty- second degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite consistory. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Luizia Montgomery; his wife, Mrs. Lena Montgomery; two daughters, Mrs. Marian "Ethel" Post and Mrs. Lucinda L. Kemph; four sons, Paul Montgomery, Dennis Montgomery, Bob Montgomery and Bill Montgomery, three brothers, William Montgomery of Riverton Kansas, Jim Montgomery of Grainfield Kansas, and Fred Montgomery of Dearborn Michigan.
