James Mitchell, aged 45 and William Murphy, aged 25, while working in the Oliphant Mine at Galena Kansas Tuesday morning were both killed by a premature explosion of about 40 sticks of powder. Their bodies were strewn all over the drift. The explosion was caused by using a hot hole or by tamping with a steel rod.
