Funeral services for Ben H. Messenger, 57 years old, resident of this city for thirty-two years, who died from a cerebral hemorrhage at 2 pm yesterday at the Picher hospital, Picher Oklahoma will be held at 3 pm Sunday at the Christian church. The Rev. A. P. Cameron of Miami Oklahoma will officiate. Burial will be in Galena Kansas cemetery. Masons will have charge of the services at the grave. Mr. Messenger, who was employed as millman at the Childress and Heggem Mine, near Cardin Oklahoma, was found lying unconscious at the top of the elevator at 9 am yesterday. He was taken to the Picher hospital where he lived for five hours.
He had not been ill and apparently was feeling fine when he left his home for the Picher mining field yesterday morning. Born in Beardstown Illinois, Mr. Messenger came to Galena Kansas when he was 15 years old. Prior to this employment with the Childress and Heggem Mine, he in partnership with Leon Childress of Joplin, held mining interests at Central City. Before that he had other mining interests in this district. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Modern Woodmen and was also a member of the Christian church. He is survived by a widow and one son, Ben Messenger, Jr., at home; a daughter, Mrs. Jake Soulen of Galena; a brother John D. Messenger of Cairo Illinois; two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Horton and Mrs. Dora Berry of Alton Illinoia and his mother, Mrs. Helen D. Messenger of Alton.
