McBee, Elmer
McConnell Mine
Elmer McBee was killed last Saturday afternoon in the McConnell Mine one and one-half miles northwest of Miami, and C. E. White was seriously, but not fatally, injured the same time by a falling slab of rock. McBee was buried Monday afternoon in the G.A.R. cemetery at Miami, funeral services being conducted in the afternoon from the Friends' church.
White, after being brought to Miami, was placed in the care of Dr. A. M. Cooter, who dressed his wounds. He is cut considerably about the head and face, his chest is crushed and he has a number of other minor bruises and cuts about his body. Dr. Cooter gave out a statement Monday morning to the effect that White would recover if no complications set in, although remaining unconscious from the time he was removed from the mine until Sunday night. It is said that accident was unavoidable. The roof of the mine where the accident occurred, is about ninety feet high, and entirely beyond control of timbering. Surface of the floor is soft and will not hold any kind of bracing, the ceiling is a shale rock which makes accidents more likely than in the case of other formations.
