Woodchuck Mine

Miami Record Herald · Oct 12 1917

Leonard Lester, a miner, about 30 years old, fell down a shaft at the Woodchuck Mine Sunday and was instantly killed. Leonard was on the first level, it seems, where a shot had been fired. He was walking toward the shaft when he stumbled and fell to the second level, a distance of 60 feet. The Woodchuck Mine is located near Tar River, where Leonard had been employed for some time. He lived at Tar River Oklahoma [later now Cardin Oklahoma].

Disclaimer: If you search for these articles somewhere else, searches should be done by date in the city of Miami Oklahoma. The clippings have "Miami Newspapers, Miami Oklahoma." The paper changed names several times making it difficult to search by title. Most of the Hard Rock Lead and Zinc Fatalities newspaper clippings are from the personal files of I. D. Hulvey, former powderman in the Picher mine and then owner of the Hulvey Insurance Agency.
