Latham, Joel

Fitzpatrick and McChristian Mine

Galena Newspaper · Dec 13 1884

About noon last Monday, Joel Latham, an employee in the Fitzpatrick and McChristian hard rock lead and zinc shaft at Lehigh Kansas, was precipitated from the surface to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 90 feet, and killed instantly. The following particulars of the affair are learned from J. H. Woodford, who went over to Lehigh Tuesday: Latham carelessly stepped into the tub without noticing that the whim was out of gear. One of the men working with him attempted to put on the brake, but the lever was tied back, and nothing could be done to save Latham from his doom. There was considerable water in the bottom of the shaft, and it is probable that he was drowned, as by one slight bruise was found on the back of his head. He leaves a wife and two children.
