Clary and Shults Mine

Miami Newspapers · Aug 14 1903

Oscar Lake, a young man 20 years old, was killed at the hard rock lead and zinc Clary and Shults Mine, northeast of Galena Kansas Wednesday morning. He picked up an old piece of gas pipe that contained powder and attempted to straighten it. The fact that the pipe contained powder [dynamite] was not known. On pounding it with a rock the powder was exploded. The young man lived only a few hours.

The paper changed names several times making it difficult to search by title. Most of the Hard Rock Lead and Zinc Fatalities newspaper clippings are from the personal files of I. D. Hulvey, former powderman in the Picher mine and then owner of the Hulvey Insurance Agency.
