Picher Oklahoma, Aug. 28 - -Elmer Steele, about 25 years old, died tonight at the Picher hospital from injuries received shortly afternoon when the "can" in which he was being lowered to his work in the Picher Mine No. 25 dropped approximately 100 feet. Charles Howe, who was in the can with Steele, was in a critical condition tonight at the Picher hospital, Picher. Steele was unmarried and lived at the California Rooms on South Main street, Picher. Attempts to locate relatives had not been successful tonight. His mother and other relatives are thought to live somewhere in Arkansas. Steele's body is at the Todd undertaking company, of Picher.
The accident occurred as the men were entering the mine to resume work after the noon hour. Something went wrong with the rig machinery and the can plunged downward.
Picher Oklahoma. Charles Howe, 45 years old, who was injured Saturday in an accident at Eagle-Picher Mine No. 25 in which Elmer Steele, 40, was fatally injured, died early yesterday in a hospital in Picher. Steele died Saturday night as a result of the accident. The two men were in a tub being lowered into the ground when an emergency brake on the hoister broke, allowing them to fall 150 feet into the sump of the shaft.
Howe is survived by a widow and several children. He resided on North Picher street, Picher. Funeral services will be held at the Union church at 2 pm tomorrow afternoon with the Rev. Wesley Post officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Galena Kansas.
The body of Steele was sent to Levaca Arkansas, today for burial. He is survived by a mother, Mrs. Sarah Steele, at Levaca, and a brother, Fred Steele, of Picher.
