Heaps, Garland "Buck"

Garland "Buck" Heaps, 35 years old, died at the Picher hospital at Picher Oklahoma this morning shortly after he was struck in the back of the head by a falling boulder at the Beck Mine No. 3, southwest of Baxter Springs Kansas. The injured an was rushed to Picher in an ambulance of the Harvey undertaking company, but died as he was being placed on the operating table. Hospital physicians said a basal skull fracture caused his death. The accident occurred shortly after 7 o'clock.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Heaps; one son, Jackie Lee Heaps, and one stepson, Bobbie Lee, all of Commerce Oklahoma; his mother, Mrs. Julia Osterhaut, also of Commerce; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Cox of Picher, and Miss Luella Heaps of Commerce. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Mitchelson undertaking company of Commerce is in charge.

Funeral services for Garland"Buck" Heaps, Commerce Oklahoma miner killed Thursday morning near Baxter Springs Kansas, will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church at Commerce. Father George Aman of Miami with officiate. Burial will be in the G.A.R. cemetery at Miami, under the direction of the Mitchelson undertaking company of Commerce. Heaps died in a Picher hospital at 8 o'clock Thursday morning, a short time after he was struck in the back of the head by a falling slab.
