Carl Junction, Missouri, Apr 3.--Merle Franklin Hayes, 28 years old, lifetime resident of this vicinity, died at 10:28 this morning in St. John's hospital at Joplin from shock following amputation of his left foot. Death followed soon after the operation, which was performed after the foot had been infected from a slight injury received more than a year ago while Hayes was working in a hard rock lead and zinc mine. At the time he was injured Hayes did not regard the hurt as serious and continued his work, but his condition gradually grew worse until an operation was necessary. Born near Smithfield in 1902, he had resided in this district all his life and was well known here. He had worked as a hoisterman at several mines of the district.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George J. Hayes of Carl Junction; his widow, Mrs. Lois Hayes; a small daughter, Virginia Ruth Hayes; five sisters, Mrs. R. M. Sandford of Independence Missouri, Mrs. Charles Ristine of Corona California, and Misses Helen Hayes, Geneva Hayes and Lois Hayes, at home; three brothers, Elmer Hayes of Wilmington California, Billy Hayes of Detroit Michigan, and Elijah Hayes, at home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, awaiting the return to Carl Junction of his mother, who left a few days ago for a visit with relatives in California. She is returning home. The body is at the Roney undertaking company at Carl Junction.
