Ferling, Charles
Age 21
Lennan Lead and Zinc Mine
Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock occurred another terrible mine accident, the first to happen within several months' time. The accident happened at the Lennan Lead and Zinc Mine, when Charles Ferling and W. Williams were putting in "splitters" and it is supposed that they had not given the holes time to cool off as it was nearly quitting time and they were in a hurry to get through their day's work when the fatal accident happened. The two men were hurriedly brought to this city where medical aid was given at the offices of Dr. F. L. Wormington. Mr. Ferling died within a few minutes after being brought to Commerce Oklahoma. He was a young man about 21 years of age and resided in this city with his young wife, who was waiting for him to come home to supper when the horrible news reached her ears. She was completely overcome by grief. She was formerly Miss Elsie Asher and was only married since last December. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the residence with Rev. J. J. Bay in charge of the services. Interment was made in the G.A.R. cemetery at Miami.
Mr. Williams, whose home is in Commerce, was hurried to the St. John's hospital, Joplin Missouri, where an attempt will be made to save one of his eyes, one of which was blown out entirely. He sustained other injuries that may prove serious, aside from perhaps leaving him totally blind. He is about 20 years of age and single.
