Age 10

New York Mine

Joplin News Herald · Apr 20 1931

Picher Oklahoma, Apr. 20--Lester Edge, 10 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edge, Mineral Heights addition, was killed at the New York Mine at 10 last night when he was caught in the conveyor belt of a tailing drag operated by the boy's father. The youth's body was badly crushed and one of his legs was almost severed.

The boy had gone to the mine shortly before the accident to take his father's midnight lunch. The father met his son a short distance from the tailing pile where the drag was being operated. After receiving the dinner bucket from the boy, the father returned to his work at the drag, believing his son had left for home as was his usual custom. Instead of returning home the lad followed his father to the tailing pile and fell on the rapidly moving belt.

Mr. Edge immediately stopped the machinery. The boy was dead and considerable time was required to remove the body from the conveyor pit. Note: Burial date Apr 21, 1931, at the G.A.R. Cemetery,
