Between four and five o'clock yesterday evening. Leon Davis lost his life in a mine accident at Picher Oklahoma. He was riding in the can out of the shaft to secure some powder when the chain became detached from the cable and he fell 150 feet to the bottom of the shaft. He died while on the way to the hospital. He has relatives living in Springfield Missouri. Note: One article has Leon Davis and the other article has Orley Leon Davis.
Picher Oklahoma, March 22 Orley Leon Davis, a hard rock lead and zinc miner, age 21, died at 5:30 o'clock Friday evening from injuries received about thirty minutes before, at the Big Chief Mine. Davis was a powder man on the night shift, and according to other miners who worked with him, he had been sent on top to get a plug for a machine. He was descending the shaft by himself when the can bumped against the side of the shaft and was unhooked. Both fell about 100 feet, the can reaching the bottom first.
An ambulance was called and the injured miner was taken to the Picher hospital where he lived only a few minutes. Davis was a single man. His parents, O. L. Davis of Carthage Missouri came to Picher shortly afterward and the body will be sent to Carthage for burial Sunday.

A suit has been filed by the parents of Orley Leon Davis, 17 year old boy killed in the mine of the Picher Big Chief Mining company on Mar 22, claiming damages for $2,489. The boy met his death when the hoisting tub fell to the bottom of the shaft. Note: In the first article about the accident the age was 21, in this article the age is 17.
