Paul Brown, a 32 year old miner living at 1066 South Picher Avenue in Picher Oklahoma, was killed instantly about 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, January 22, when he was struck by a falling slab while working in the Rialto Mine No. 4 shaft of the Nellie B. Mining Company, southwest of Picher.
Brown was employed as a machine helper in the mine. According to reports, he had been working on a lead face and was on his way to get some powder to shoot several holes Saturday evening. He was walking under the roof, estimated to be 20 feet above the level when he was buried under what was said to be "about 300 cans of dirt and rock."
Fellow workers and assistants of the Goodson funeral home worked frantically for 30 minutes before Brown was released and pronounced dead. He was working alone at the time of the accident
Brown had been a resident of Picher for 6 years and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Velma Brown; a son Jimmy Harold Brown and a daughter Lou Anne Brown both of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Brown; three brothers, Clarence Brown, Bobby Brown and James Brown and two half-brothers, Glen Brown and Gary Brown, all of Paragould Arkansas.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the chapel of the Goodson funeral home, with Rev. Gloyde Lukehart officiating. Burial was in G.A.R. cemetery at Miami Oklahoma. Pallbearers were C. W. Gilmore, W. J. Gilmore, Charles Easley, Doyle Sappington, Kenneth Battorff and J. B. Powell. Note: Burial date Jan 24, 1949. G.A.R. Cemetery Records, Miami Oklahoma.
