Abstract Data

age 65, died Jul 18, 1996, at his Chesapeake Virginia home of cancer. Colonel Day was born in Joplin Missouri to Elmer Day and Nellie Day. A veteran, served in the U.S. Navy in the Arctic Ocean aboard the USS Edisto, before receiving orders to flight training in Pensacola Florida. He was designated a naval aviator in 1951 and accepted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Day accumulated over 5,000 hours flight time, including combat operations flying in Korea and helicopters in Vietnam. In Vietnam he served as the executive officer and then commanding officer of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 363, the "Lucky Red Lions." He retired from the Marine Corps in 1970. His personal decorations include the Distinguished Flying cross, the Navy Commendation Medal with the Combat "V", two Purple Hearts, the Air Medal with four silver stars and the Combat Action Ribbon. Burial in the G.A.R. cemetery, Miami.
