Abstract Data
Henry Rucker of Grove Indian Territory; Tom Browning, Grove; Charley Watson, Grove and Roy Moore of Noel Missouri were killed in the collapse of the new steel bridge which was under construction at Carey's ferry on Grand River on Thursday. One of the most horrible accident ever recorded in this part of the country. Twenty-six men were on the works when the awful crash came and all were hurled headlong into the river, a distance of 42 feet, amid heavy timbers and steel bridging. Of the whole number, not one escaped some injury, some seriously and four killed outright. The cause of the accident was the giving away of the falsework, and much blame is cast on the foreman, as it was considered by many to be unsafe and some had quit the work because they considered it unsafe. As soon as messengers could go, physicians were called from Grove, Southwest City, Afton and Vinita, who did all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the mangle victims. The following is a list of the more seriously injured as given by the Grove Sun: BAILEY, Bill of Grove, leg broken and other injuries. BAKER - Frank - Vinita, ankle broke and head cut. BINGHAM - E.
