a photo. Private Young was born in Commerce Oklahoma, Feb 18, 1915 and at the time of his death was 30 years and 18 days of age. He attended the Cardin Oklahoma and Treece Kansas schools and graduated with the Class of 1933 from Picher High school, afterwards taking a post graduate course at the Columbus Kansas High school and latter attended the Junior College in Miami. His father Mickael 'Mike' Young passed away in 1935. Pvt. Young was employed by the Eagle-Picher Central Mill and went to Illinois late in 1938 and was employed with the Pure Oil Company at Clay City Illinois. His wife Dorothy Winchester Young, passed away Jul 18, 1943. He entered the service in Feb 1944, from Menlo Park California and took his training at Fort Knox Kentucky. Captain Peter L. Henderson writes of Pvt Young as follows: Pvt. Young was wounded in action in German Nov 22, 1944 near Erberich while acting as gunner with a tank battalion...he returned to his Company, Mar 28, 1945, upon his request he was assigned as cannoneer in a tank. His platoon of tanks had the task of clearing a forest 2 miles north of Dorpe Germany where the crew did a splendid job and captured numerous prisoners. In the afternoon of April 8, Oscar Lee was instantly killed...' He was awarded the Purple Heart when wounded and sent it to his mother and step-father Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Walter Green in California.

the body of the late Private Oscar Lee Young, former Ottawa countian who was killed in action against Nazi forces in Germany on Apr 8, 1945, will arrive in Baxter Springs Kansas, Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist church in Baxter Springs at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Clarence Burgin of Neosho Missouri will officiate. He will be assisted by the Reverend Warner of Baxter Springs. Military services by the Baxter Springs American Legion post and Masonic rites will be held at the grave in G.A.R. cemetery, at Miami. The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Walter Green of Baxter, Route 1, the soldier lost his life after his return to duty following his recovery from wounds received in fight in November, 1944. He was a member of the U.S. 743rd tank battalion. He was 30 years old at the time of his death. He was graduated from Picher Oklahoma high school in 1933. He was graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma A and M college, Miami with the class of 1937 and attended the Pittsburg Teacher's college in Pittsburg Kansas.. He had no other immediate relatives.
