A charge of manslaughter in the first degree was filled Tuesday against Lonnie Grubbs of Picher in connection with the death of Mrs. Moss, a 22 year old expectant mother, of Douthat Oklahoma. Grubbs is alleged to have been the driver of a hit-and-run car which struck Mrs. Moss at 7:30 Monday night as she was getting into her motor car from the street side. She died at 10:30 the same night at the Miami hospital... the accident occurred on Connell avenue, directly in front of the postoffice. Mrs. Moss died from shock as a result of severe hemorrhage resultant from extreme wounds about her head, her physician said. Her skull, he said may have been fractured. In addition, she received severe bruises about her lower legs. ...information was given by two sisters-in-law of the victim, one of whom was slightly injured in the accident. The vehicle had no headlights and was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the three women. After running down Mrs. Moss, the car failed to stop immediately... Mrs. Rosie Higgs, sister-in-law, one of Mrs. Moss' companions, received leg abrasions when struck by the car, while Mrs. Dorothy John, the third woman, similarly related, was uninjured. Surviving are her husband, William T. Moss; three sisters Mrs. Viola King of Joplin Missouri, Mrs. Edith Rodman of Commerce Oklahoma and Mrs. Blanche Clay of Miami; a brother Albert Teague of New Mexico. Durnil funeral home, Picher. Alonzo Grubb, aged 36, charged with first degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Mrs. Hattie Moss, 33 year old Douthat woman, who died a short time later on Nov 13, 1944, will not go to trial during the next term of district court. ..he was permitted to leave the county jail after posting $2,500 bond. Grubb, the 36 year old ex-service man who was arrested on the night of Nov 13, 1944, when it was alleged a car he was driving had stuck a woman on South Connell, Picher, resulting in her death, pled 'not guilty' to a hit-and run charge when arraigned in district court, Friday... it was alleged that a car with no headlights, traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into three women. After running down Mrs. Moss, the car failed to stop. Grubb and an unnamed man were arrested a few minutes later by the Picher officers who caught up with the pair about two blocks from the scene of the accident.
