a letter was received from Pfc Miner's commanding officer explaining how Miner, a member of a Marine Corps platoon, lost his life while in service on Guam last Jul 22. The letter said in part: 'Lester was a member of our first platoon. During the operation his platoon was called on to take up new positions and clear out entranced Japs who had a company of the First battalion pinned down under their fire. While advancing forward two men were wounded. In Lester's attempt to move the men to safety he was killed instantly by Jap machine gunfire. He carried out his mission unselfishly with no thought of personal safety.' Miner entered the Marines Sep 14, 1943, at the age of 18. He had fought through the entire Saipan engagement without receiving a scratch.
