Melvin Huffman, a returned veteran, shot his small son, Michael Huffman in the head and then turned the 25-caliber pistol on himself and inflicted a wound from which he later died. They were both rushed to the Picher hospital where the baby died at 2:35 o'clock in the afternoon, from the bullet which entered his left temple and came out on his right side. The father died about 10:30 that evening. There were only two bullets in the pistol and both had been fired. The shooting took place at the home of Mrs. Rosa Green, 324 South Connell ave where his wife Thelma Fay Huffman lived. Melvin had been making his home with this parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Dan Huffman at 438 South Emily, since his discharge from the Army last July. It was stated that the father was sitting on the floor playing with the baby when he suddenly took the pistol from his pocket and fired. The baby was standing only a few feet away, balancing himself by a dresser drawer in which his toys were kept...burial of Michael Huffman was in the G.A.R. cemetery, Miami.
