Mr. and Mrs. Clarence M. Griffith, Miami Route 1, have been notified by the Navy department of the death in action of Pvt. Hicks, of the US Marine Corps. Hicks, 20 years old was born in Picher, but made his home, following the death of his mother, with the Griffiths. He attended Wyandotte Oklahoma high school. The telegram states that he was killed in action of Okinawa, Ryukyu islands on May 12, 1945, in performance of his duty and service to his country. No details were given in regards to burial. Enlisting in the Marines May 21, 1944, Hicks was attached to the 6th Marine division at the time of his death. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kidd and Mrs. Frances Alexander, both of Picher. Note: Re-burial on Mar 15, 1949 in Miami G.A.R. cemetery.
