Brandon, Don B.

Abstract Data

the body of Corporal Brandon, 28 years old son of Mr and Mrs. Oscar Brandon of near Hockerville Oklahoma was found floating on the old Rightgood Pond, less than a mile from Hockerville, Sunday morning about 9 o'clock by two small boys who reported it at once. Following an investigation, the Marine's death was pronounced as being caused by drowning, with indications as being suicidal. Corporal Brandon, in the service four years, and a veteran of 37 months' active overseas service, was taken to Baxter Springs Kansas on Jun 2, 1945, by his parents, where he had planned to board a train for Hot Springs Arkansas to enter an Army hospital for rest treatment. It was reported he was seen Saturday near the mine pond, and Sunday his hat was found in a road near the pond. His furlough bag and belongings were discovered under a trestle 20 feet from the pond. A wrist watch on his body had stopped at 9:10. Altho no money was found in his billfold, investigators discounted a foul-play theory when no marks of violence were found. Long and vivid scars on his neck were believed to be from old injuries. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Ray Brandon of Hockerville and Lewis Brandon of Baxter Springs Kansas; four sisters, Mrs. Lula Clogston, Mrs. Leola Clogston, Mrs. Ruth Roher and Mrs. Adeline Bryant, all of Hockerville. Durnil funeral home. Burial in the Baxter Springs Kansas cemetery.
