Lewis enlisted in the Air Corp in Dec of 1939, and went to work as an office clerk in the post office, eventually his military shifted gears and he was sent to gunnery school. After being trained for combat, the Welch Oklahoma native was offered a chance to become a top turret instructor in Tennessee, as a temporary assignment. Lewis went on to other assignments, traveling from Nebraska to England, he was on a crew that flew 35 missions over Europe. He was able to leave the service near the end of the war, but was called back into service to serve in Korea as a member of an artillery unit, but the term lasted only nine months. Today Lewis resides in Commerce Oklahoma Eastwood manor nursing home.
