Abstract Data
Obituary -- age 29. The death of a 29 year old woman at Miami Oklahoma Baptist hospital early today may result in an investigation by Adair county Oklahoma officials, it was reliably understood here. Mrs. Essie Watkins of Stilwell Oklahoma, the victim, died at 2 am from septicaemia. She had recently been staying at Commerce Oklahoma. Her father, J. H. Robinett of Commerce, with whom Mrs. Watkins had been living, told County Attorney William E. Poteet that his daughter, while in delicate condition, had received severe treatment at the hands of her husband at Stilwell Oklahoma, about 10 days previously. This was the basis for action that may bring Adair county officials into the investigation. Mrs. Watkins was admitted to the hospital Monday afternoon. Poteet sent a telegram to E. G. Carroll, county attorney at Stilwell, located about 30 miles southeast of Tahlequah Oklahoma, notifying him of Mrs. Watkins death. The alleged mistreatment of the woman was understood to have occurred at Stilwell. Following this incident, Mrs. Watkins returned to Commerce to stay with her father, it was reported. Two marks on the victim's body led to the belief that the woman might have suffered severe blows. Poteet pointed out that any criminal action in the case would be taken in Adair county, not here, since the alleged assault was committed at Stilwell. Meantime the body is being held at request of the county attorney at the Mitchelson undertaking company at Commerce. Poteet expected a reply to his telegram sometime this afternoon. He was unable to reach the Adair county official by telephone because of present disrupted wire conditions throughout eastern Oklahoma. Besides her husband and father, Mrs. Watkins is survived by three sons and three daughters, all of Stilwell; four sisters, Mrs. Grace Cole of Green Forest Arkansas; Mrs. Claude McCumber of Commerce, Mrs. Iva Wilson of Los Angeles and Miss Violet Robinett of Commerce, and one brother, Leon Robinett of Commerce.

Obituary -- Harley Watkins, wanted for questioning in an alleged beating he gave his wife, Mrs. Essie Watkins, three weeks before the latter's death, was arrested at Stilwell by the Adair county sheriff, it was announced late this afternoon. Watkins was placed in the county jail, County Attorney William E. Poteet was informed by telephone. The warrant issued for Watkins' arrest charged the Stilwell man with murder. Poteet said he received the information from E. G. Carroll, county attorney of Adair county. Mrs. Watkins, 29 years old, died in the hospital from septicaemia. Her father, J. H. Robinett of Commerce, told county authorities that her husband had given her a severe beating about three weeks ago, this leading to her death because she was in a pregnant condition. Mr. Robinett told a reporter in the country attorney's office that the husband of his daughter had apparently used a pistol with which he beat the victim repeatedly over the head. He said that following the alleged assault his daughter returned from Stilwell to Commerce to live. Mrs. Watkins was admitted to the hospital Monday afternoon. Mr. Poteet, who notified the Adair county attorney of the victim's death, said Mr. Carroll would likely come to Commerce Sunday to view the body. Funeral arrangements will not be completed until after that time. Mr. Robinett said his daughter told him when she returned to Commerce that the husband had administered a beating that continued from about 7 pm Christmas Eve until 2 am Christmas Day. The Commerce man said his daughter's head was badly lacerated and bore severe bruises as a result of the alleged attack. Mrs. Watkins was the mother of six children, all of whom live at Stilwell.
