Abstract Data

Obituary -- Maggie Turner, a woman of about 28 years, committed suicide Sunday evening, by hanging, at her home northwest of Cardin Oklahoma. She used a quarter inch rope about three feet long which she had extended through a flue hole in the partition of the house, anchored to a small stick in the adjoining room. She had stood on a chair, which she had evidently kicked from under her when she made the fatal drop. When found her toes touched the floor. She was discovered by her husband about two hours after she had committed suicide. He immediately notified the sheriff's office in this city. Sheriff Ed Freeman and Ray McNaughton hastened to the scene of the tragedy, arriving about 9:15 Sunday evening. They made the best investigation they could, including close questioning of the unfortunate woman's husband, but nothing was learned that threw much light on the suicide incident. The only reasons the husband could assign for the rash deed, is that he had talked with his wife about enlisting in the U. S. Army. It was thought possible that she had brooded over this until she decided to find relief in suicide. Dr. Willis of Commerce was instructed by the officers to cut the body down and have it prepared for burial at Commerce. She was alone in the house when the deed was committed. The Turners had no children.
