Obituary -- Commerce. Jan 30. James Abner Newman, resident of Ottawa county Oklahoma for 50 years, and a deputy United States marshal for several years before statehood, died Sunday afternoon at his home on North Main street in Commerce. He was 82 years old. At one time Mr. Newman owned a large acreage of land in this section, receiving an allotment from the government. He was of Indian blood. His children also were given allotments, most of the north part of Commerce and adjoining land formerly belonged to the Newman family. After retiring as deputy marshall Mr. Newman devoted his attention to farming. Later he operated a hotel in Miami. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Hannah Newman, two sons, Lemuel ? Newman of Baxter Springs Kansas and David Newman of Cherryvale Kansas; and five daughters, Mrs. Minnie Warner of Tulsa Oklahoma, Mrs. Ada M...of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, and Mrs. Laura ? Cantrell, Sophia Ward and Mrs. Goldie Lankard, all of Commerce. The funeral was held at 10 o'clock this morning at the Catholic church of Miami. The services were conducted by the Rev. George Grievenkamp. Burial was in G.A.R. cemetery, under direction of the Hal Mitchelson undertaking company. Note: Apologies for mis-spelled names. The microfilm was difficult to read.
