Obituary -- Mr. and Mrs. Clarence M. Griffith, Miami Rt. 1, have been notified by the Navy department of the death in action of Pvt. Melvin J. Hicks, USMC. Private Hicks, 20 years old, was born in Picher Oklahoma, but made his home, after the death of his mother, with the Griffiths. He attended Wyandotte Oklahoma high school. The telegram states that he was killed on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on May 12, 1945, in performance of his duty and service to this country. No details were given in regard to burial. Enlisting in the Marines May 31, 1944, Private Hicks was attached to the 6th Marine division at the time of his death. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kidd and Mrs. Frances Alexander, both of Picher Oklahoma.
