Abstract Data

Obituary -- Walter Harp of Ulysses Kansas, was beaten to death with a hammer and a woman purposing to be his wife, Ethel Harp, slugged into unconsciousness and left for dead at 9 o'clock last night near the Buffalo schoolhouse, a short distance northwest of Commerce. Two men, known only as "Blackie" about 35 years old and "Tom," about 21 years old, were accused by Mrs. Harp. She said they beat her and her "husband," robbed them of $200 and two diamond rings, and fled in Harp's Chrysler, 52 sedan after dragging Harp and her about 20 feet into a cornfield just south of the schoolhouse. The woman lay in the cornfield all night suffering from her wounds and about 6 o'clock this morning managed to crawl and walk to the first farmhouse north of the school... Ulysses Kansas on Aug 31 Walter Harp, wheat grower of this community who was beaten to death is morning near Miami was unmarried, it was learned here today. He left Ulysses four days ago for an unknown destination, and about the same time Mrs. John Harp, his sister-in-law disappeared from her home in Ulysses. The woman's stepfather, J. R. Pate; of the Grant County Republican, said today that she probably is the Mrs. Harp who accompanied the murdered man. Her husband deserted her several years ago and she was said to have been keeping company with Walter Harp recently. Walter Harp came to Ulysses four years ago from Arkansas. He did not own any property in this vicinity, Pate said.
