Abstract Data

Obituary -- The body of Frank Buck, wealthy Quapaw Indian who died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon while vacationing at Long Beach California, will be returned to Commerce Oklahoma Saturday night. Buck, a resident of Lincolnville Oklahoma virtually all his life, had been active many years in American Legion affairs. He was also a member of the Forty and Eight organization, a branch of the legion. He was 52 years old. In ill health for more than a year, Buck had received treatment at various times for a heart ailment at St. John's hospital in Joplin Missouri.
Nine years ago the Quapaw tribesman offered his car to the Miami Legion quartet to attend the national American Legion Convention of Portland Oregon. The quartet, composed at the time of Wilbur Worley, Sam Barnes, Harry Ballinger and Harrell Hocker, sang at the convention and traveled with Buck without cost. In the fall of 1927, Buck sailed from New York on an American liner to attend an American Legion Convention at Paris.
Buck was a large property owner and his home was located a short distance from the New York Mine. His wealth was accumulated largely from discovery of lead and zinc deposits on his lands. It was recalled that last July 11, Leonard Buck of Miami, the Lincolnville man's son, was fatally injured in a motor car collision near Quapaw that claimed the lived of two other men.
Buck's mother, Mrs. Mary Daugherty; his wife, Agnes Buck, and a son Billy Buck, were with him in California when death came. The Mitchelson funeral home, Commerce, is in charge of funeral arrangements, which were not completed until arrival of the Buck family.
