Bowman, Claude

G. Bowman - a shoveler for the Central Lead and Zinc mine at Tar River Oklahoma was instantly killed last night by a falling boulder. He was going down the shaft in the can when it bumped the side of the shaft, knocking loose a boulder that fell crushing him to death. Mr. Bowman, who was 25 years of age, leaves a wife and child who are now residing in Barnett Missouri. The body, which has been taken in charge by the Mitchelson undertakers of Commerce, will be sent back to his home for burial.

...Claud Bowman's head was laid open by the concussion. He never knew what hit him, the accident was swift and death so sudden. A large boulder was loaded on the material car and was being sent up. The car struck a "pigeon hole," dislodging the heavy mass. Bowman, it seems, was standing in the shaft, when the boulder came hurdling downward striking him on the head. Bowman, it seems was a green hand. He had been employed in the mine only about a week, and was not, apparently, aware of the danger of standing under an ascending can. The body was turned over to the Commerce Oklahoma funeral company to be prepared for burial. Note: The microfilm showed a fold in the original newspaper that hid the beginning of the article.
