Abstract Data

Boatmen found the body of Harry Rimmer, 22, this morning, directly under the Devil's Promenade bridge approach for which his car plunged...carrying both he and his ex-wife, Mrs. Mary L. Rimmer, to death under circumstance that remains a mystery. Mystery surrounded the entire affair. The movements of Mrs. Rimmer could not be traced beyond the time she left her father's home, took an alarm clock to a Picher Oklahoma jeweler's for repair and was next seen when her limp form was pulled from the river. Workmen reported they heard three screams, one just as the car hit the wire, the others as the car plunged off the bridge...The body of Harry Rimmer was found about 9 am by George Seay, Picher, and Edward Stanley, Quapaw Oklahoma, a few yards from the bridge itself. It was presumed that his body was swept out of the submerged car as it was being winched into to the shore. It floated to the surface this morning, drifted to a nearby telephone pole and lodge there. After viewing the body, and conferring with Rimmer's father, Chesnut announced the case was closed. "No one knows what caused it, or what was in their minds," Chesnut said. Funeral services were announced for Mrs. Rimmer, at 1 pm Thursday at the home of her father. Burial in Hickory Grove cemetery under Durnil direction. Surviving Harry Rimmer are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Rimmer, Picher Oklahoma; two brothers, Ray Rimmer of the armed forces and Bert Rimmer of Picher; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Keith and Miss Francis Rimmer of Picher, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Red of California. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday at the Durnil chapel. Burial in Greenlawn cemetery in Kansas.

Harry Rimmer - [Note: on his tombstone in Greenlawn his name is Cecil Harry Rimmer] A theory of murder and suicide was advanced today by county officials in the drowning of Mrs. Mary Louise Rimmer, 19, whose body was recovered several hours after the car in which she was riding plunged 40 feet off the flood wrecked Devil's Promenade bridge, while officers dragged the swift waters of Spring River for the body of Harry Rimmer, 24 year old North Century Oklahoma hard rock lead and zinc miner from whom she was divorced...Initial investigation disclosed that Rimmer left his father's home alone, Monday about noon, went to the home of his ex-wife, and drove away in a $50 Studebaker sedan found four hours later, bottom-up, about 100 feet from shore in Spring River...It was reported that Rimmer drove to Devil's Promenade alone on Sunday night, returning home in a despondent mood. He was in bad health, they were told. From all sides, the theory of suicide by Mrs. Rimmer was heavily discounted. She could not drive a car, apparently was in good health and was not dressed to meet the occasion. For, some observers pointed out, a young woman determined on suicide usually dresses in her best, for some reason. Mrs. Rimmer, attired in a low-priced print dress, and apparently without any makeup, was taken from Spring River at 4:05 pm Monday. A medium priced wrist watch she wore to her death had stopped at 12:07 pm. At about that time, workmen at the bridge said, the black 1936 sedan, racing at top speed, hurled off the open approach and plummeted into Spring River. A wire stretched across the road some 150 yards west had been torn loose...there were no skid marks evident on the graveled road...There was no chance officers agreed; that Rimmer had left the car at the last possible minute...
