Melvin Chubb - 'Punk' Chubb, Joplin Missouri, died Saturday morning, Feb 3, 2001, in Spartanburg South Carolina, after a long illness. He was 90. Mr. Chubb was born Jul 18, 1910, in Baxter Springs Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs. Alva Chubb. He worked with Eagle-Picher Company, Joplin, for 45 years, becoming vice- president and general manager of Eagle-Picher s electronics division. He was recognized as one of the world s leading experts on battery technology. He was made responsible for the research and development of special military batteries after Eagle-Picher received its first battery contract with the U.S. Army in 1944. In 1952 he was named manager of the battery operation when it was established as a separate operation known as the Couples Division. As the division developed and produced special batteries for the space and defense mission, Mr. Chubb was named general manager and vice president at Eagle-Picher. Numerous patents related to new battery technology were issued in his name. He married Agnes Pfaff from Bangor Maine on Jan 31, 1933. She preceded him in death on Oct 19, 1979. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Joan Montgomery, of Spartanburg. Paul Thomas funeral home, Picher Oklahoma. Burial is in Greenlawn cemetery in Kansas.
