the miner died in Picher hospital shortly after he suffered a heart attack in his home at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. He had lived in Douthat since 1927. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Veda Abernathy; a daughter, Mary Jo Abernathy, and a son, Charles Abernathy, all of the home; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Bellis of Commerce; four brothers, Bob Abernathy of Miami, Otis Abernathy of Picher, Lester Abernathy of Kansas City Missouri, and Phillip Abernathy of Commerce and three sisters, Mrs. Doris Norton, Mrs. Alice Davis and Mrs. Irene White, all of Commerce.

Bert G. Abernathy - 37 year old Douthat Oklahoma resident, passed away last Thursday afternoon at 12:45 following an illness of the flu and a heart attack that day. The Thomas ambulance was summoned and he was rushed to the Picher Oklahoma hospital where they pronounced him dead. He was born Jul 5, 1914 at Paris Texas and had lived at Douthat for 25 years. He was a member of the First Baptist church at Douthat and was employed as a hard rock lead and zinc miner at the Hartley Mine for the last 15 years. He formerly worked for Mike Evans for 15 years. The Rev. Russell Moudy of Commerce Oklahoma officiated at the services held Sunday at the Douthat Baptist church. Burial was in the Greenlawn cemetery in Kansas. Thomas funeral home. Pallbearers were Allen Wright, Clyde Hawk, Carroll Karnes, Preston Miller, Bill Smotherman and Buster Reeves.
