Abstract Data

Bureau of Indian Affairs officials said Kwapa was the oldest living full-blooded Quapaw Indian in the nation. He was well known in the hard rock lead and zinc mining area, and active in Indian affairs. Married Pauline Clarkson in Waco, Texas on Sep 16, 1940. She survives. He is also survives by three sons, Loyd Buffalo of Joplin Missouri; Roy Buffalo, Billings, Montana and Arthur Buffalo, Ulysses, Kansas; eight daughters, Mrs. Lorena Bear, Quapaw, Oklahoma; Mrs. Dorothy Bailey, Mrs. Cheryl Williams and Mrs. Terry Millard, all of Galena; Mrs. Beverly Johnes, Riverton, Kansas; Mrs. Pat Weaver and Mrs. Maggie Skye, of Baxter Springs, Kansas and Mrs. Roberta Mitchell, of Norfolk, Virginia. Indian rites will be conducted at grave side. He was the son of Joseph Buffalo and Ollie Medicine Buffalo; his maternal grandparents were Mary Joseph and John Medicine, early day chief of the Quapaw tribe. His paternal grandmother was Kahdahskah and his paternal grandfather was Buffalo Calf and a a tribal council member.
